Arvisionadu: The Hidden Gem of Sardinian Viticulture

Arvisionadu, also known as Arvesiniadu, Avresiniadu, Arvusiniadu, Arvusiniagu, and Uva Oschirese, is an ancient native Sardinian white grape variety. Its cultivation is limited to just a few dozen hectares in the Goceano region, particularly in the municipalities of Benetutti and Bono. This rare grape represents one of the most authentic expressions of the island’s viticultural biodiversity.

Origins and History

The first written records date back to 1780, when the Sardinian agronomist Andrea Manca dell’Arca mentioned it in his agricultural treatise. Some scholars believe its origins may be even older, possibly dating back to Roman times when it was known as Albu Signatu. Despite its historical significance, it nearly disappeared over the centuries due to its low yield and the preference of winemakers for more commercially viable varieties like Vermentino and Malvasia.

Ampelographic and Agronomic Characteristics

Arvisionadu is distinguished by its late ripening and remarkable vegetative vigor. The medium-to-large grape clusters have thick-skinned berries, a characteristic that makes it particularly suitable for producing wines with good structure and aging potential. The vine thrives in loose, granitic soils and requires careful canopy management to control its growth. Yields per hectare are relatively low, averaging around 6,000 kg, which contributes to the high quality of the final product, making it even more valuable.

Vinification and Sensory Profile

Traditionally blended with other native grape varieties such as Nuragus and Malvasia, Arvesiniadu is now experiencing a revival through single-varietal vinifications. Modern winemaking techniques are highlighting its potential in dry white wines, which showcase a well-balanced structure and pronounced mineral sapidity.

Enhancement and Recovery Projects

In recent years, several Sardinian wineries have invested in the revival of this grape variety, carrying out enhancement projects with the support of research institutions such as the University of Sassari and the AKINAS – Unique Grapes from Sardinian Biodiversity project.

Wineries such as Arvisionadu and Dessena are producing single-varietal labels that are gaining increasing interest among enthusiasts of indigenous wines. Notably:

Cantina Arvisionadu: Located in Località Luzzanas, in the municipality of Benetutti, this winery was founded with the goal of preserving and promoting Arvisionadu, one of Sardinia’s rarest and oldest grape varieties. In addition to three hectares dedicated to this grape, the estate also cultivates Cannonau, Cagnulari, Sangiovese, and Syrah. Among their standout wines is G’Oceano Antica Vigna Sennore Arvisionadu, rated 5 Way Stella 95/100 by Vinoway Italia.

Cantina Dessena: This winery’s vineyards are located in Benetutti, at the heart of the historic Goceano region, home to the rare Arvisionadu grape. Founded in 2006, the company is committed to the promotion of this native variety. Their Fàula wine was rated 5 Way 93/100 by Vinoway Italia.

Arvisionadu represents a true jewel of Sardinian winemaking heritage, a grape variety with great potential that deserves to be preserved and valued. Its rarity and distinctive qualities make it an intriguing option for those seeking unique wine experiences. With the growing commitment of wineries and institutions to its protection, the future of this grape variety finally seems secure, allowing new generations to discover its extraordinary character and long history.
