Pinot Grigio DOC Delle Venezie: Innovation, Collaboration, and Strategies for the Future

The press conference titled “Pinot Grigio DOC Delle Venezie, Perspectives for the Future: Innovation, Collaboration, and Strategies Aligned with Change” was held in Milan at the prestigious Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, organized by the Consorzio DOC Delle Venezie. The event provided an important opportunity to assess the current status of the denomination, which leads among Italian still white wines in terms of production and export volumes, with over 90% of the product destined for international markets.
Moderated by Luciano Ferraro, Deputy Director of Corriere della Sera, the event hosted prominent figures from the wine industry and research sector: Albino Armani, President of the Consorzio; Fabio Del Bravo, Director of Supply Chain and Market Analysis at ISMEA; Anna Caterina Tagliabue and Ludovico Mannheimer from EUMETRA; Luca Rossetto, Professor of Agricultural Economics and Policy at the University of Padua; and Vincenzo Gerbi, Full Professor at the University of Turin and Vice President of the Italian Academy of Vine and Wine. Each speaker provided crucial insights to outline the future of Pinot Grigio DOC Delle Venezie and address the challenges facing the Triveneto wine sector.
Albino Armani opened the conference by presenting the denomination’s positive figures, which in 2024 recorded a +3% increase in bottled wine and an +8% rise in certifications, exceeding 1.7 million hectoliters packaged. He emphasized the importance of adapting to global market changes, with a particular focus on environmental sustainability. The Consorzio is working on amending the production guidelines to introduce a low-alcohol version of Pinot Grigio DOC Delle Venezie and promote the use of disease-resistant grape varieties.
Fabio Del Bravo highlighted the strong performance of the international market, noting a +10% growth in sales through large-scale retail channels (compared to 2023) and a surge in sparkling wine exports (+17% in 2024). He also underscored how the DOC Delle Venezie has contributed to increased exports of white wines from Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia, and Trentino, showing a +110% rise in volume and +117% in value since 2017, now representing 24% of total Italian white wine exports.
Anna Caterina Tagliabue and Ludovico Mannheimer from EUMETRA presented a comparative study on Pinot Grigio consumption across the USA, UK, Canada, and Italy. The research revealed differences in consumption behaviors but a convergence in selection criteria: 56% of consumers seek freshness, lightness, and the guarantee of a certified supply chain. Notably, Anglo-Saxon markets show an appetite for new wine proposals while maintaining strong loyalty to Pinot Grigio, appreciated for its versatility and adaptability to different consumption contexts. The study also highlighted the growing demand for low-alcohol wines, particularly among younger consumers and foreign markets.
Ludovico Mannheimer stressed the importance of communication to counter the general decline in wine consumption, pointing out the need to embrace new communication models to engage younger audiences, who are often detached from traditional wine narratives.
Vincenzo Gerbi delved into the technical aspects of producing low-alcohol wines, distinguishing them from dealcoholized wines and highlighting an enological approach that starts from the vineyard to create naturally lighter products. He emphasized how modern winemaking should prioritize expressing the grape’s varietal characteristics rather than correcting the final product.
Luca Rossetto concluded with an analysis of global wine market dynamics, reaffirming the importance of exports for Pinot Grigio DOC Delle Venezie, which now accounts for nearly 95% of sales abroad. He also addressed the challenges posed by climate change and the need for sustainable agronomic solutions, such as introducing resistant grape varieties, to maintain international competitiveness.
The conference concluded with the presentation of the 2024 Report from the Consorzio DOC Delle Venezie, presented by Stefano Sequino, Director of the Consorzio. The report confirmed the denomination’s positive performance and outlined future strategies to ensure quality, sustainability, and competitiveness. Sequino emphasized the vital role of Triveneta Certificazioni in managing and controlling the production chain, thanking all stakeholders involved for their commitment to enhancing the value of Pinot Grigio DOC Delle Venezie.
