Abraxas: The Heroic Tradition of Viticulture in Pantelleria

In the heart of Pantelleria, amidst the fierce wind and scorching Mediterranean sun, stands Cantina Abraxas, a winery that tells the story and character of this rugged yet generous land. As part of the Tenute Scudieri project, Abraxas represents one of the two agricultural branches of the Scudieri family, which since 2020 has been investing in the enhancement of local excellence.
Under the enological direction of Chiasso & Cotarella, Abraxas’ production is rooted in the heroic tradition of Pantelleria viticulture, with bush-trained vineyards that trace back to Phoenician history and have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage.
The winery spans 40 hectares, including 15 dedicated to viticulture, with a cellar perched at an altitude of approximately 600 meters, offering breathtaking views of the vineyards and the sea.
The cultivated grape varieties include Zibibbo, Traminer, Mondeuse, Nero d’Avola, Nerello Mascalese, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Carignano, Malbec, Petit Manseng, Gros Manseng, Merlot, and Viognier.
Among the standout labels are Alsine (90% Zibibbo – 10% Viognier, 15,000 bottles), Sentivento (100% Zibibbo, 6,000 bottles), Don Achille (100% Zibibbo, 6,000 bottles), Vipera (100% Nero d’Avola, 5,000 bottles), Oxalis (85% Alicante – 15% Cabernet Franc, 5,000 bottles), Sabj (80% Nero d’Avola – 10% Alicante – 10% Merlot, 15,000 bottles), and Reseda (60% Nero d’Avola – 40% Alicante, 5,000 bottles).
The winery is particularly renowned for the production of DOC Passito di Pantelleria, crafted using the most traditional techniques while adhering to strict regulations, including sun-drying grapes on racks in the open air, with movable covers in case of rain. The entire production process, from cultivation to vinification and bottling, takes place on the island, ensuring complete quality control. A standout among its offerings is the “Don Achille” 2014, awarded 93 Gold points by Vinoway.
Contrary to what might be expected from wines produced in such a hot climate, tastings of the new vintages reveal a genuine and elegant character. The interpretation of both native and international grape varieties, which were already planted when the Scudieri family acquired the winery, becomes a true artistic expression, making for an intriguing experience in the glass.
For example, “Alsine” 2023 shines with a delicate straw-yellow hue. Its aroma is characterized by the typical aromaticity of Zibibbo, lending it a refined and never cloying profile. Subtle herbal notes add a commendable balsamic touch. The taste is elegant and vibrantly fresh. Its structure balances lightness with strong territorial identity. A true flagship wine, awarded 96 Stella points at the Vinoway Selection 2025.
The preview of “Vipera” 2023, not yet bottled, already presents an interesting interpretation of the red grape varieties grown in Abraxas’ estates. Harmony is perceived in every aspect, from appearance to taste, passing through a broad and enveloping aroma. Its gustatory and olfactory volume embraces the fruit, promising an exciting evolution with aging. We eagerly await its bottling to share this experience.
