Gambino: A Project Taking Root on Mount Etna

Etna is not a region that reveals itself easily. It is a place that demands respect, expertise, and the ability to interpret its nuances. I had the opportunity to deepen my understanding of the Gambino winery during the wonderful Contrade dell’Etna 2025 event, one of the most authentic and meaningful experiences for truly grasping the identity of this region.
It is precisely in contexts like this that organizations capable of distinguishing themselves emerge—not through superficial appearances, but through substance.
On the volcano’s northeastern slope, at high elevations, altitude becomes a key factor in determining quality. The volcanic soils, rich in minerals, combined with significant temperature fluctuations, create the ideal conditions for producing grapes of exceptional integrity, characterized by freshness, aromatic precision, and a lively palate.
It is from this balance that wines are born that clearly express the character of the terroir. It is no coincidence that Etna is today one of the most closely watched and studied regions in contemporary Italian winemaking. And Gambino fits into this landscape with a clear philosophy: to enhance without altering.
Growing grapes on Mount Etna means working under conditions that are not always ideal. Steep slopes, variable microclimates, and a complex agronomic management system make every decision a precise technical choice.
After discovering the winery at Contrade dell’Etna 2025, we wanted to explore its work in greater depth, going beyond the initial tasting to research and sample wines from previous vintages as well. This process allowed us to gain a clearer understanding of the winery’s evolutionary trajectory and the consistency of its production over time.
Gambino has turned this complexity into a defining feature, focusing on careful viticulture that prioritizes quality and respect for the vineyard. The native grape varieties thus become true expressions of the terroir: Carricante and Catarratto for the whites, Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio for the reds, as well as Grillo and Nero d’Avola.
A clear philosophy emerges in the winery: to minimize intervention. The goal is not to “build” the wine, but to accompany it. Not to overshadow the terroir, but to make it come through clearly. The wines are distinguished by their expressive clarity, balance, and stylistic consistency. The whites exhibit a crisp, clean profile and savory notes, while the reds offer elegance, freshness, and depth.
Over time, Gambino has carved out its own path. As proof of this, the winery is featured in the Vinoway Selection 2026 guide, which can be accessed via a free app and is also available in English, where it has earned Gold-level recognition.
Tifeo Bianco DOC Etna 2023 92/100 – 5 Way
Tifeo Rosso DOC Etna 2020 91/100 – 5 Way
Feud’O Bianco DOC Sicilia 2023 91/100 – 5 Way
Duvanera Rosso DOC Sicilia 2021 90/100 – 4 Way
It is precisely by comparing these wines over time that we have observed a remarkable evolution in style and quality, a sign of genuine growth. Etna does not reward improvisation. It rewards those who understand it.
Gambino is proof that it is possible to create value through a serious approach that respects the local area.
Because in the world of wine, the real challenge isn’t making a name for yourself. It’s staying credible. And on Mount Etna, credibility isn’t something you talk about. It’s something you prove, harvest after harvest.
