At the end of a long road, the agreement between the EU and Mercosur was finally concluded, affecting many sectors, including the agri-food industry. This is a major step that consolidates privileged relations with a strategic partner of global importance, composed of some of the main countries of Latin America: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuela and Bolivia as full members, and Chile, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana and Suriname as associate countries. This economic zone represents one of the most relevant global realities, ranking among the major players in international trade.

Giangiacomo Gallarati Scotti Bonaldi, Federdoc President said, “We are very pleased with the understanding reached for the European quality wine sector thanks to the signing of the EU-Mercosur agreement. The protection of 349 European Geographical Indications will offer our companies the opportunity to strengthen their presence in South American markets, enhancing the unique heritage they represent as territorial excellences. In addition, the elimination or reduction of duties, which makes the agreement even more comprehensive, will help increase the competitiveness of our companies in the Mercosur area. The agreement also includes outcomes consistent with the sustainability strategy promoted by the European Commission, such as compliance with the Paris Climate Agreement and strong commitments against deforestation.”
