Tazzelenghe: a wine to explore, a territory to experience
Written by Redazione di vinoway | Published in curiosity, news
In the heart of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, among the rolling hills overlooking the valleys of Buttrio, Rosazzo, and Cividale del Friuli, grows a grape variety as fascinating as it is mysterious: Tazzelenghe. This native black grape variety, whose name means “tongue-cutter” in Friulian, is known for its tannic power and pronounced acidity, which give the wine a decisive character and unique personality capable of soliciting the most experienced palates.
Origins and History
The origins of Tazzelenghe are rooted in the Friuli area, where the cultivation of indigenous grape varieties has been a fundamental element of wine culture for centuries. Despite its millennia-old history, it was in danger of disappearing during the 20th century, due to viticulture being increasingly directed toward better-known and more productive grape varieties. However, in recent decades, the grape variety has been recovered thanks to the efforts of a few passionate local winemakers who recognized its potential and distinctive identity. As a result of these efforts, it is now back on the map, becoming one of the most sought-after rarities among connoisseurs of fine wine.
Ampelographic Characteristics and Cultivation
Tazzelenghe is a vine that is distinguished by its vigor and special need for well-exposed, well-drained soils. The vines are characterized by a medium-sized, cylindrical cluster with a thick blue-black skin that gives the grapes resistance to disease and adverse weather conditions. This grape variety ripens late, around mid-October, a factor that contributes to a high level of acidity in the grapes, but also to excellent concentration of aromas. Despite its favorable characteristics for resistance, it requires special care in winemaking because of its high tannic and acid content. Its cultivation in Friuli today is limited to a few specialized areas, with about 55 hectares dedicated to this grape variety.
Vinification and Aging
The winemaking process of Tazzelenghe is crucial to express its full potential. Because of its natural tannicity, it requires careful vinification, which includes aging in oak barrels for at least 12 months, followed by further aging in bottles that lasts about 24-30 months. This long period of aging in wood allows the wine to soften, reducing astringency and enriching itself with complex aromas ranging from dark chocolate and tobacco to notes of spice and bark. The bottles are enriched with aromatic layers that evolve over time, offering an ever-changing tasting experience. The deep ruby red color, with violet hues, fades toward garnet with age, while the bouquet expresses a symphony of aromas ranging from ripe red fruits, such as plum and currants, to suggestions of wood and chocolate.
Tasting
Tazzelenghe on the palate is a full-bodied wine with a lively acidity that makes it fresh and dynamic, although characterized by robust tannins that require good aging. The dry, warm and enveloping flavor imparts a feeling of fullness that lingers for a long time. The powerful structure and complexity of its aromatic notes make it ideal for lovers of intense wines, perfect for those seeking an out-of-the-ordinary experience.
Gastronomic pairings
Given its strength and personality, Tazzelenghe is a wine that pairs perfectly with rich, flavorful dishes. It is the ideal companion for red meats, game and roasts, but also for braised meats and well-structured stews. Game preparations, such as jugged hare, or robust lamb and beef dishes, find in the wine’s intensity an ideal ally to balance their savory notes. It is not uncommon to find this wine at the table alongside aged, strong-flavored cheeses, which manage to marry beautifully with its tannins and marked acidity.
A Rarity to Discover
It is not a wine for everyone, but for those who enjoy discovering authentic and complex grape varieties, it represents a journey into the heart of Friuli’s winemaking tradition. Its production is limited, making each bottle a rarity to be appreciated and treasured. In recent years, local producers have invested in the enhancement of this grape variety, helping to restore its former glory. Continued attention to its cultivation and winemaking is bringing Tazzelenghe to ever greater redemption, making inroads into the hearts of wine lovers around the world. It is not just a wine: it is a piece of history, a testament to the resilience of Friulian viticulture, which continues to evolve and surprise us. If you are looking for a wine that can tell the story of a land and its tradition, it is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating wine experiences to savor.
Vinoway Italy, with a rating of 97/100 5 way Star, highly rated the Tazzelenghe from the Conte d’Attimis-Maniago winery, located in Buttrio (UD) in the Colli Orientali del Friuli, which has a winemaking tradition dating back to 1585. The estate includes 110 hectares of vineyards and produces wines from both international and native Friulian varieties.
